Residential construction relies on several common truss types, each suited to different design needs. Roof trusses include the Fink (or W-truss), the most widely used design for standard gable roofs; scissor trusses, which create vaulted ceilings; attic trusses, which open up usable bonus space; and hip and gable trusses, used for hip roofs and gable-end walls.
Floor trusses typically use a parallel chord design, allowing long spans while leaving room for HVAC, plumbing, and electrical to run through the open webbing. Builders can also incorporate cantilevered floor trusses for overhangs and bay windows, or trusses with pre-planned openings for stairwells and chimneys.
